We know design is in everything, and due to the pervasiveness of modern technology, more people notice it than ever before. Pixels, roadways, clothing, and that app you can’t quit are all examples of obvious design. Cursing the heavens in gridlock is apparently bad design. But what is the good stuff?

If you’re like me you believe the best of design, the real interesting stuff, is more abstract and therefore harder to see. Interesting requires a little more effort to make connections between the seemingly unrelated, but you’re smart and love a challenge. Because observing the connection between crypto-currencies, your favorite coffee company, and internet memes isn’t noteworthy in a vacuum: their value depends on their relation to us, sometimes u and often U.S. This is a uniquely American perspective on Design’s presence in over and around collective Us.

Design & Us is all about design’s intersection with art, business, mental health, love, social justice, and more. And design is always at the root, tethering us together. You will love following along if you’re chronically curious, a polymath, or anyone wanting to catch wind of the future before it arrives.

“Who is she?”

My name is Danielle Evans, and I’m a dimensional typographer and creative director. I created Food Typography, a project dedicated to original puns made from real foods (and later objects) in 2013. I found value in a new expression and breathed life into this modest concept. And it caught fire. Since then I’ve worked as a professional commercial artist and have made strange, beautiful art for some of the world’s biggest brands: Target, Cadillac, Wix, Aria, Disney, KC Chiefs, to name a few. You can see more of my visual work at my studio site, Marmalade Bleue.

Powerful words granted me access to spaces beyond the Rust Belt of eastern Ohio, where I was raised. And I’ll be honest, I love the tension of coastal thinking with interior roots. I’ve written extensively for Working Not Working magazine and here and there for Dribbble. I’ve spoken and taught internationally about the joys and deep convictions of food folded into words, tradition, consumerism, opportunity, and oppression. And I am forever searching for weird and wonderful people to join me.

Who is Us?

The AmbitioUs. CurioUs. VirtuoUs. CourteoUs. Those of Us that sense the underlying connections and tensions design creates that haven’t put them to words. Until now, that is.
